That way companies who are looking for a good front-end developer would have some sort of indication to go by, albeit non-official. They would also liaise with schools and other educational instances to ensure best practices are taught to new front-end developers (more detailed and accurate information on the guild and its intentions over at Quirksmode).

What exactly is understood by quality and how that would be measured are matters to be agreed on over the next few months, but I find it quite a noble initiative. I believe the guild would have all the best intentions and wouldn’t crumble down to an elitist group, like many attempts to similar groups before.

Moreover, I believe not only the Netherlands could benefit from such an initiative, but it would be nice if also Belgian front-end developers could acquire some sort of recognition for being standards aware and delivering high quality work. I posted a comment about that, but I don’t know if the enthusiasm among web agencies’ front-end developers and freelancers in Belgium would be as high as with our neighbours.
